Alternative routes

For those seeking an alternative to the beach, there are mountains surrounding the bay, which rise out of cultivated olive groves. These mountains are blanketed with diverse forests of fir, pine, cedar and plane trees and are threaded with rushing streams and waterfalls, enabling Thassos to maintain its lush greenery despite the Mediterranean heat.

Pine marten, hares, rabbits, tortoises, snakes and lizards all find a habitat here. Above Golden Beach looms Mount Ipsario, included in the European Union's Natura 2000 project as is a unique ecosystem sheltering 13 species of rare and protected wild birds. The forests may be explored on foot, or by jeep, bicycle or motorbike which are available for hire at reasonable rates. There are many shaded forest tracks, including one following the coast from Golden Beach village to Limenas, encompassing secluded beaches, turquoise waters, breathtaking views and lush vegetation.

You may also visit our traditional village of Panagia, as well as island's capital Limenas town, providing numerous sightseeings such as, the archaeological museum and ancient market, the ancient theatre and Acropolis. Do not forget to visit the Municipal Museum of Polygnotos Vagis located in the village of Potamia.

Moreover plenty of traditional villages and sandy beaches can be found all over the way around the island of Thassos waiting for you to explore them!
